Real? Fake? Does it matter?

Whether this is real or fake is up for debate, but the real question is: is it of value to Bud Light either way? What do you think?

Three tips for Marketing Success

1. Do what you’ve always done: if it’s worked for the last 20 years why wouldn’t it work for the next 20? Forget about anything new and innovative and stick to what you know. Belittle all those who claim they have ways of connecting to your customers over “the internets.” We all know it’s just a series of tubes.

2. Tell your customers to shut up: your customers are always trying to give you feedback, help you improve, and let you know where your opportunities are. Tell them to shut their pie-holes. What good could possibly come from listening to those whiny brats anyways? Just because they have great ideas and tell all their friends about everything you do well (and poorly) doesn’t mean they can tell you how to run your business. This is capitalism after all, and if they don’t like it they can (and will) shop somewhere else while you build the greatest business on earth doing things exactly the way you want.

3. Don’t be too exciting: everyone knows that remarkable is forgettable. I mean, who remembers the last time a business totally amazed them? See, that’s what I thought. Stick to the boring and dull. There’s nothing sexy about a rotary phone, but it gets the job done and that’s what you should model your business after. Slow and steady win the race, after all.

Did you find yourself nodding in agreement with any of these? If so, we need to talk because this is just about the exact opposite of the sort of things you should be doing to grow your business. Happy April Fools.

Should you advertise in a recession?

Yes.

Oh, you wanted a little more to back that up? How about this, from Adrants:

A McGraw-Hill study of 600 businesses found businesses that maintained or increased their ad spend saw higher sales growth during a recession and in the years following. In fact, the study found those who maintained or increased their ad budgets experienced a 256 percent increase in sales compared to those who cut their budgets.

Another study found businesses that advertised during a recession saw their market share increase 2.5 times.

And if you think waiting until the recession is over is a smart thing to do, consider this; a third study revealed 80 percent of the businesses that waited until a post-recession economic expansion to advertise saw zero increase in market share. Which, of course, is obvious since everyone else began advertising again.

But don’t take their word for it. Here’s a whole book on why spending on new opportunities and smart marketing is smart in a recession.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going… on new ways to grow their business and prepare for the recovery.

These walls are talkin’

David Burn, the man behind Ad Pulp, isn’t having any luck selling his house in South Carolina. So just like any other good ad person would, he turned to Twitter. Well, more specifically, his house did:

As far as I know, this is the first time anyone has sold a house on Twitter by letting the house speak for itself (certainly many social media savvy realtors have used twitter to sell houses, but probably not given the house itself an account.) I suspect this won’t be the last (if it works.) In any case, kudos to David and everyone else out there pushing the “Twittersphere” to new heights. You just never know what’s next.

So what exactly does a house tweet about? Find out here.

The Future is in your Hands

Literally. Pull your phone out of your pocket and look at it for a second. It is the future. This is where you will place your next order for…everything.

Chipotle released a mobile ordering iPhone app and the demand was so overwhelming it crashed their servers.

The mobile revolution is here.

If you thought the web revolutionized your business, just wait until mobile hits. Now consumers can get the information they want, anywhere they want, to order whatever they want. Are you ready to serve your customers in real-time? Are you ready to listen to their suggestions? Make sure you can answer a resounding, YES.

Times are tough, no doubt about it. Budget cuts are being made left and right. Often the first thing to go is marketing, since after all it’s just an extra expense, right?

Think again. What’s the idea behind spending money on advertising and marketing? Brand awareness, promoting a new product, etc? Yes, but no. Dig a bit deeper. You spend a$1 on advertising with the hope of getting $2 (or at least $1.01) back in revenue. That’s the basic idea: ROI or whatever you want to call it. So that begs the question that if you know you can make more back in revenue than you spend in advertising, why would you ever, ever, cut that advertising budget?

The truth is (and this might sting a bit) you probably didn’t bother with making sure you got your money’s worth when times were good. It’s OK, we all get carried away sometimes in grandiose campaigns. But don’t let that alter your thinking into over-reacting in times like these and completely slashing your marketing budget. What should you do then?

Don’t cut your budget, but rather, make it more effective. Your budget for marketing that earns more revenue than it costs should be unlimited. Think about it this way: your budget for $1′s to turn into $1.01 should be unlimited. The great part about this is that you’ll also benefit from some less tangible (and less trackable) results from advertising like increased awareness in your community, especially when competitors are slashing their ad budgets instead of making them more effective.

But don’t just take my word for it, here’s what Seth Godin has to say:

If the local bank were offering a sale on dollar bills, ninety cents each, how many would you buy?

Most rational people would say, “I’ll take them all please.” Especially if you had thirty days to pay for them.

So, why, precisely, do you have an ad budget?

If your ads work, if you can measure them and they return more profit than they cost, why not keep buying them until they stop working?

And if they don’t work, why are you running them?

Read the rest of Seth’s thoughts over on his blog.
